Icehotel
Jukkasjärvi, Swedish Lapland, Sweden
Each spring, blocks are harvested from the Torne River and stored. When winter comes, artists from many countries arrive to build the hotel again. Every art suite is a one-off design carved in ice and snow, and it melts back into the river when the season ends.
Sleeping in the cold rooms involves thermal sleeping bags on reindeer hides at well below freezing. Guests usually spend only part of their stay there. There is also a permanent building, kept cold all year, so a version of the ice rooms is open in summer too. Warm rooms, a restaurant and outdoor activities such as dog sledding and northern-lights trips fill the rest of the visit.
